Atomic Veterans National Class Action
UPDATE - February 2nd 2009 - Details of the Statement of Claim issued by Merchant Law Group.
Conservative Government Announces $24,000 payment to Atomic Veterans.
The government’s $24,000.00 payment to some Atomic Veterans is the same pathetic offer that the government made to a small percentage of the class in the Suffield chemicals weapons case and for payment to certain military in other circumstances. It has nothing to do with the wrong that was committed or the degree of pain and suffering or indeed death, caused by the wrongdoing of the government. It is more about politics than about fairness. And from experience, Merchant Law Group knows that often it is difficult for people to even receive this inadequate payment.
Compensation for what in many cases is a lifetime of suffering based on the value of a used half ton truck and without any regard to the degree of entitlement, is compensation that insults the recipient former members of Canada’s military just as it ought to embarrass the government to make this inadequate offer.
When the program actually comes into effect, rather than simply being announced as a part of attempts at vote getting, Merchant Law Group will be able to advise whether people may sign to receive the money and still remain in the class or whether they should elect to not try to receive this small payment and still receive fair compensation as a part of the class action.
