The United State's Food and Drug Administration has linked the use of gadolinium in MRI and MRA with the development of nephrogenic systemic fibrosis/nephrogenic fibrosing dermopathy ('NSF/NSD'). NSF/NSD is characterized by tight, rigid skin that renders bending of the joints difficult, and fibrosis that may lead to multiorgan failure and death.
