Contact Lens Solution Class Action

July 2007 -- The class action law firm of Merchant Law Group LLP has commenced class proceedings across Canada against Advanced Medical Optics Inc. concerning its recalled COMPLETE® Moisture PLUS™ contact lens solution, which is associated with an eye infection know as Acanthamoeba Keratitis (AK). Among other things, these class action lawsuits against Advanced Medical Optics Inc. are concerned with:

  1. Offering for sale and selling a contact lens solution which is not fit for the purpose intended for, and thereby, endangering the health and safety of the public.
  2. Adverse effects associated with the use of this solution such as eye infections, eye pain, eye redness, blurred vision, sensitivity to light, excessive tearing, blindness, and others.
  3. Costs of purchasing the recalled product; costs of acquiring or replacing a safe contact lens solution; the cost of replacing contact lenses and lens storage cases; and other associated costs.

All Canadians and Canadian residents who purchased or used COMPLETE® Moisture PLUS™ contact lens solution are eligible for this class action, regardless of whether you experienced symtoms. 

On May 29, 2007, government officials warned the public of at least 138 confirmed cases of acanthamoeba keratitis, a parasite-caused infection that can be difficult to detect and treat. Advanced Medical Optics subsequently recalled 2.9 million bottles of the same contact lens solution.

Acanthamoeba is the name of a parasite. If this organism gets on the cornea of your eye, it can cause a serious infection known as acanthamoeba keratitis. Recent studies show that individuals who used Complete Moisture PLUS were almost seven times more likely to develop this condition than those who did not.
