Merchant Law Group LLP has launched class action litigation against the provincial governments of Alberta, Saskatchewan, and Manitoba for of the inappropriate prolonged use of administrative segregation on individual inmates, serving in provincial jails and correctional institutions. This class action litigation seeks financial compensation for affected individuals who were subject to inappropriate prolonged ‘administrative segregation’ (also known as solitary confinement) in provincial jails.
Administrative segregation has been demonstrated to cause or make worse mental health problems. Its use is linked to higher rates of additional incarceration. This class action is being launched on behalf of a proposed class consisting of individuals who were held in prolonged administrative segregation in Provincial Correctional Centres.
