NURSING HOME CLASS ACTION

The Covid-19 (Coronavirus) pandemic has caused many Canadians to fall ill and has caused almost 25,000 deaths in Canada. According to news reports, Covid-19 has caused thousands of deaths among nursing and long-term care home patients and staff in Canada. These nursing and long-term care homes are asserted to have been negligent in their handling of the pandemic. In fact, news reports show that Canada has the worst record among wealthy nations for Covid-19 deaths in nursing and long-term care homes, and it has been estimated that Canada’s nursing and long-term care homes may account for up to 80% of all Covid-19 related deaths.

On March 10, 2021, Merchant Law Group LLP filed a class action in the Court of Queen’s Bench for Saskatchewan on behalf of those who are living or previously lived in retirement or long-term care facilities owned, leased, operated, or managed by Extendicare.

The Statement of Claim alleges that Extendicare was negligent in its handling of the Covid-19 pandemic,  and that Extendicare breached its contract with residents by failing to provide adequate care and safety,
