How to Find the Right Edmonton, Alberta Personal Injury Lawyer

Want to win your personal injury case? Success starts with finding the right lawyer.

Here are a few questions you can ask yourself as you begin your search.

#1) Are they experienced?

Experience makes a lot of difference in most personal injury cases. You want to work with a lawyer who handles injury cases day in and day out.

You’re looking for a savvy negotiator and bulldog litigator who can effortlessly switch between coming to a fair compromise and the skills it takes to win in court.

Most of our attorneys have been practicing at Merchant Law for at least two decades. Some have been at it for three.

Like any law firm, we do have less experienced associates on staff. But if they happen to work with you, they’ll be consulting with much more experienced lawyers who can guide them through your case.

#2) Does the lawyer have a good track record with cases like mine?

Ask for concrete results and dollar amounts. While your lawyer won’t be able to violate attorney-client privilege by giving you specifics, they should be able to discuss cases like yours and how they brought them to a successful conclusion.

Ask them about specific steps. What evidence did they look for? How were they able to use it? How thoroughly do they investigate each case, and how much attention will you be given?

#3) Am I comfortable with this lawyer?

You’ll work with your injury lawyer for 12 to 24 months. You’re also entrusting this person with a significant portion of your financial well-being.

You need to feel good about communicating with them. Do you feel like they’re friendly and empathetic? Do they answer your questions politely, or are they condescending?

Do you trust them to pay you promptly when your settlement arrives?

Sometimes choosing the right lawyer comes down to a gut check and how you “click” with a particular person.

#4) Is the fee structure clear?

Only hire a lawyer once you understand how and when they expect you to pay them and how much.

You aren’t necessarily looking for the cheapest lawyer you can find. Cheap lawyers mean worse results on your settlement offer. You are looking for a fair offer that will let you come out ahead after you’ve used the lawyer’s services.

Don’t be afraid to ask questions, and don’t be afraid to shop around a little if you’re uncomfortable with the math.

#5) Is the lawyer a good communicator?

Do you feel clear on your next steps? Do you understand when and how your lawyer will communicate with you as your case progresses?

Failure to communicate is the number one complaint clients have about their lawyers. Do you feel confident you’ll hear from your lawyer when you need to? Do you feel like it’s easy for your attorney to understand you, and for you to understand your attorney in turn?
